Eye opener. Snack foods that are healthy are a trap for excess calories. See this photo. The trail mix has only 150 calories per serving. Not bad you think. But the serving size is only 1/4 cup….barely a handful. I don’t know about you but if I am watching a game I am already onto the next handful after the first one just reached the old pie hole. BE AWARE…your
healthy snack may causing the weight to build and hang on. Read labels and divide your treats into zip lock containers based on serving size.

One of my all-time most inspirational patients told me once that she “eats to live”. I have heard this term many many times but hearing it come out of the mouth of one of the healthiest people I know was quite profound. Recently I have developed a personal mantra when I am making food choices. It’s simple; I ask myself what meal on the menu will represent eating to live or eating to die? This can be quite profound and you don’t have to be a Naturopathic Doctor to figure it out. So its a rainy day in Seattle, your boss just pissed you off and you decide to go out for lunch. On your right is the golden arches and down the road a bit is your healthy foods market. Your internal dialogue says “Big Mac, Fries, and a Coke… It will taste good, its cheap, plus I am pissed off and it might make me feel umm…good”. Insert question here. Is this eating to live or eating to die? You guessed it. Repeated frequent choices in the eating to die category lead us down the road of obesity, type II diabetes, heart disease, and increase the possibility of some cancers. You know this though. So you decide to head to the local natural foods market. At the deli counter you see Kale-Casear salad and then a slice of Thai Salmon. I know what your thinking its going to be expensive but guess what? its not! $5.17 with taxes. Last I checked this was either less or equal to the Value Meal we just discussed. No eating to die with this choice. Its really a choice and guess what? As with my most inspirational patient, repeatedly choosing to “eat to live” will show in the way you look, feel, and ultimately help prevent many diseases.
